Tonight after a busy day of snorkelling...this long weekend is going to be a tough gig I tell you...my Bro and I deceided to go for our own little unguided walk around the Island. We were thrilled when we saw Turtle tracks and came across this little sweetie. She was digging her nest ready to lay her eggs. What a truly magnificent sight and amazingly beautiful creature. I simply love Turtles, but even more so after this trip and seeing so many of them. :)
We watched her for close to an hour carefully digging her nest, but then the poor thing hit a tree root, so she had to start all over again as it wasn't deep enough. We deceided to leave her for a bit and continue our walk and then come back a bit later. When we did go back the actual proper night walk group had found her so we joined in and were pumped to know that she was about to lay.

Turtles will attempt up to 7 nights to build a proper nest to lay their eggs, at that point they are reaching desperation and their eggs are slowly decreasing in numbers. Given that only 1 in 1000 make it to adulthood, Turtles need to lay as many eggies as possible.
After seeing this gorgeous animal lay her eggs, we were told we were moving onto see if we could find any baby hatchlings in a nearby nest. Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!! I was so excited!! However, my happiness soon grew to sadness when only one tiny little hatchling was dug up alongside loads of dead hatchlings and unfertilized eggs. :(
The Guide said as far as bad nests are concerned this was the worst. He said clearly the Mum was in desperation after obviously having constant nights of bad luck nest-building, so she was forced to build a really shallow nest. Therefore the majority of the eggs and hatchlings were literally "cooked" to death in the heat of the sand, as it wasn't deep enough. :( He said he had released 25 from the nest the night before, which made me feel a touch better but when he tells you that another nest he dug up had 186 healthy hatchlings you realise how bad this nest was. :( xx
